Diwali in America

In Indian-American communities, Diwali is celebrated with oil lamps (diyas), rangoli (floor art), fireworks, and sweets. In Edison, New Jersey, and Cupertino, California, the celebrations are large enough to shut down streets. In 2023, Diwali was declared a school holiday in New York City, making it the first South Asian holiday in the nation's largest school system. The AHA! moment: the oil lamp represents the victory of light over darkness, which is universal, but the way it is celebrated (with firecrackers at 2 AM) is specific. . 2026: Mar 4. 2027: Mar 23.

Thanksgiving Tradition

The Pilgrims did not eat turkey at the first Thanksgiving. They ate venison, fowl, and corn. The turkey became the symbol because Sarah Josepha Hale, the editor of Godey's Lady's Book, campaigned for 36 years to make Thanksgiving a national holiday, and she promoted the turkey as the centerpiece. Lincoln made it a holiday in 1863. The AHA! moment: the dish that defines Thanksgiving is not turkey. It is stuffing (or dressing, if you are from the South, where it is cooked in a pan, not inside the bird). The stuffing vs. dressing debate is one of the sharpest culinary lines in America. . 2026: Mar 4. 2027: Mar 23.
