St. Lucia Day

In Swedish-American communities, particularly in Minnesota and the Dakotas, December 13th is St. Lucia Day. The oldest daughter wears a white gown and a crown of candles. She serves coffee and saffron buns to her family. The tradition commemorates Saint Lucy, who brought food to Christians hiding in the Roman catacombs, her path lit by a crown of candles. In Lindsborg, Kansas (called "Little Sweden"), they hold a full St. Lucia festival.
