Checkers Day

On September 23, 1952, Richard Nixon gave the "Checkers Speech," defending himself against accusations of financial impropriety by saying the only gift he had received was a cocker spaniel named Checkers, and "the kids love the dog, and regardless of what they say, we're going to keep it." The speech saved his political career. The dog's name became synonymous with political survival.
