Malanka

The old New Year's Eve is celebrated with vertep performances, caroling, and pranks. Young men dress as Malanka, a female character, and as a goat, a bear, and a gypsy, going from house to house with comic performances. In the village of Vashkivtsi in Bukovyna, the Malanka celebration is legendary, lasting until dawn and involving the entire village.
