Regional/Cultural Day
Omwaka Omuhya
The Ugandan new year begins with church services, family gatherings, and the traditional meal of matooke (steamed green bananas) with groundnut sauce, posho (maize porridge), and nyama choma (grilled meat). The matooke is the national dish of Uganda, and it is the one dish that every Ugandan loves. The new year is a time of renewal, and the tradition is to clean the house, pay off debts, and start fresh. AHA! moment: The phrase "Omwaka omuhya ogulibeera!" means "May the new year be good!" : but the real tradition is that Ugandans will visit every single relative they have on New Year's Day, eating matooke at each stop, from morning to midnight. If you have 12 relatives, you eat 12 meals.
