Union Day
The anniversary of the founding of the East African Community (EAC) in 2001. Uganda is a member of the EAC, which includes Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi, South Sudan, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. AHA! moment: The original East African Community (1967-77) collapsed because of disagreements between Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda. The main disagreement? Idi Amin. The other two countries could not work with a dictator who was expelling Asians and killing his own people. The EAC was revived in 2001, and Uganda is now one of its most active members.
