Heroes' Day
The anniversary of the 1981 ambush by the National Resistance Army (NRA) that started the bush war. The day is observed with ceremonies, and the reminder that the NRA fought a five-year guerrilla war to overthrow the Obote regime. AHA! moment: The NRA started with only 27 fighters and 27 guns. They hid in the Luwero Triangle (the area between Kampala and the Nile), and they fought a five-year guerrilla war against the government. The Luwero Triangle is now a place of pilgrimage for NRA veterans, but it is also the site of one of the worst atrocities in Ugandan history : the Obote regime killed an estimated 300,000 civilians in the Luwero Triangle during the war. The mass graves are still there.
