'Aho 'o e Emancipate

The anniversary of the 1862 emancipation of the Tongan serfs by King George Tupou I. The day is observed with ceremonies, and the reminder that the emancipation was one of the most important events in Tongan history (it freed the common people from the bondage of the chiefs). The day is both celebration and reflection, and the tradition is to attend the church service, sing the hymns, and then feast on the best food of the year.
