When the rains come to Togo, they come with force. The sky opens, the streets flood, and the air fills with the smell of wet earth that is so distinct it has its own word in every local language. Farmers plant, rivers rise, and the landscape transforms from brown to green in a matter of weeks. The first rain of the season is celebrated because it means the hungry season is ending, the crops will grow, and the land will feed its people again. Children run into the rain with their arms open, and for a moment, everyone is young.
