Tamberma Tata Gbe
The Tamberma people of northern Togo build tata houses that look like clay fortresses rising from the savanna, each one a multi-story compound with thick earthen walls, thatched turrets, and a ground floor for livestock, a middle floor for storage, and a top floor where the family sleeps. These are not ruins. Families live in them today, maintaining the same architectural tradition their ancestors perfected centuries ago. The tata is a fortress, a home, and a statement of cultural survival, and walking through one feels like stepping into a living museum where the exhibits cook you dinner.
