National holiday. Togo is one of the only countries on earth where Vodun is officially recognized as a religion, and January 10 is the day the nation celebrates it. In Lomé, priests in white ceremonial cloth pour libations of palm oil and gin onto the earth. Drummers play until their hands blister. Possession trances ripple through crowds of thousands. Practitioners from Benin, Ghana, Brazil, Haiti, and Cuba make pilgrimage here because this stretch of coast is where Vodun was born, and Togo never forgot it.
