Gelede Gbe
The Gelede masks honor the power of women, particularly mothers and grandmothers, in Yoruba tradition. Each mask is carved and painted with scenes from daily life: a woman trading at market, a mother carrying a child, a grandmother telling stories. The night performance is part spectacle, part ceremony, and entirely unforgettable. The masks are satirical, reverent, funny, and fearsome, sometimes all at once, and the dancers move with a grace that contradicts the weight of the carved wooden faces they wear.
