A day for mending, sharpening, tightening, patching, cleaning, and giving useful things another round of life.
The Tamberma Valley in northern Togo is a landscape of clay fortress-houses, baobab trees, and red earth paths that wind through fields of sorghum and millet. The Tamberma people, also known as the Batammariba, built their tata compounds here centuries ago, and they maintain them with the same techniques their ancestors used. Walking through the valley is walking through a living architectural tradition that has no parallel anywhere in West Africa. UNESCO agrees. The valley is a World Heritage Site, and every tata is someone's home.
