Calabash Gbe
The calabash is the universal vessel of Togo. Palm wine in a calabash, fufu served beside a calabash, offerings to Vodun spirits in a calabash. It grows on a vine, dries in the sun, and becomes the one object that appears at every meal, every ceremony, and every gathering. The calabash is Togo's most humble and most essential possession. Without it, you cannot serve water to a guest, offer gin to an ancestor, or eat fufu properly. It is the one item no household lacks and no ceremony can do without.
