Agoodjé Peche Gbe

In the fishing communities along Togo's coast, the Agoodjé women run the entire post-catch operation. They buy the fish from the pirogues at dawn, carry them on their heads to the smoking ovens, and spend hours tending the fires that preserve the catch for market. The men go to sea. The women do everything else, and without them, the fish would rot before it reached the inland markets. This is not a hobby. This is an industry run by women who learned the trade from their mothers and will teach it to their daughters.
