Ewe Kente Gbe
The Ewe weavers of southern Togo produce kente cloth on narrow strip looms, their feet working the heddles in polyrhythmic patterns that mirror their drumming traditions. Each strip carries a name and a proverb, each color combination tells a story, and the weavers sit on low stools in open workshops where the rhythmic clack of the loom sounds like a conversation between wood and thread. To wear Ewe kente is to speak without opening your mouth, and every pattern is a sentence the weaver spent hours composing.
