Regional/Cultural Day
Fonxwedja Gbe
The Fonxwedja ceremony is the Fon people's most sacred ritual of ancestral veneration. Families gather at ancestral shrines built inside compound walls, offer palm oil, gin, and kola nuts to the spirits of their forebears, and ask for guidance. The eldest woman in the family leads the prayers because in Fon tradition, the maternal line carries the spiritual authority. When she speaks, even the oldest man in the compound listens. The ancestors are not gone. They are here, and they are hungry.
