Somba Architecture Gbe
The Somba people, related to Togo's Tamberma, build the same fortress-style compounds across the border region. Each tata has a ground floor for livestock, a middle floor for grain storage, and a top floor where the family sleeps. The clay walls are feet thick, the thatched roofs shed rain, and the narrow entrances force anyone approaching to bend down, a defensive feature that still serves the same purpose it served centuries ago. These houses are not relics. They are homes, and they work better than anything modern architecture has offered as a replacement.
