Nana Benz Gbe

The Nana Benz were the market queens of Lomé who built commercial empires from cloth trading in the 1950s and 1960s. Named for the Mercedes-Benz cars they drove, these women controlled the textile trade across West Africa and became some of the wealthiest people in Togo. They financed political movements, sent their children to European universities, and proved that economic power in West Africa did not belong exclusively to men. Their legacy lives on in the Grand Marche, where their granddaughters still run the stalls their mothers built.
