The kola nut is Togo's guest book. Offer a kola nut to a visitor and you have welcomed them. Break a kola nut at a ceremony and you have begun it properly. The bitter, caffeinated nut appears at every gathering of consequence, and the ritual of presenting, accepting, and breaking it follows strict protocols that every Togolese person knows. The kola nut is not a snack. It is a contract, a greeting, and a sign of respect that binds the giver and receiver in mutual obligation.
