In the workshops of Lomé and Kpalime, master applique artists cut shapes from colored cloth and sew them onto background fabric to create narrative banners depicting Vodun spirits, historical events, and proverbs. Each banner takes weeks to complete, and the patterns are not decorative but documentary. A skilled applique artist can read a banner the way others read a book, and the stories they tell span from the founding of kingdoms to the daily lives of fishermen. This is textile art as history, and Togo is one of the last places where it is practiced at this level.
A day for herbs, flowers, seedlings, balcony pots, and every bit of green people manage to keep alive.
A day for the quick meal, the regular customer, the busy cook, and the food people rely on between obligations.
