Dia dos Anciãos

Communities honor their lia na'in (keepers of the word) : the elders who memorize and transmit the oral history, genealogy, and customary law of their clans. In many sucos (villages), the day includes a nahe biti (rolling out the mat) ceremony for reconciliation and storytelling. A lia na'in can recite genealogies stretching back 15-20 generations : that's 400+ years of family history, entirely from memory. No books, no written records. The keeper of the word is Timor's living archive. When an elder dies, an entire library burns.
