Dia de Reyes

Kids leave their shoes out the night before and wake up hoping for a gift from the Reyes Magos. The panaderias sell roscon de reyes, the ring-shaped sweet bread with a plastic baby hidden inside. Whoever finds the baby hosts the next gathering, though everyone forgets by February.

Regional/Cultural Day

Dia dos Reis

In Timor-Leste's Catholic calendar, Epiphany marks the arrival of the Magi, but in rural communities it coincides with the start of the agricultural cycle. Farmers bless their seeds at church, then carry them to the fields in tais-wrapped bundles. The three kings aren't just biblical : they map onto Timor's three spiritual realms: the upper world (lalik), the middle world (rai), and the underworld (rai laran). Catholic Epiphany became a portal for an ancient three-world cosmology.
