Dia da Memória

Anniversary of the 1975 Indonesian invasion. The day is observed with ceremonies, candlelight vigils, and the telling of stories from the occupation. In Dili, a solemn march proceeds to the Santa Cruz cemetery. On December 7, 1975, Indonesian forces landed in Dili at dawn. They came by sea and by air. The attack began hours after US President Ford and Secretary of State Kissinger left Jakarta : having given Indonesia's President Suharto what amounted to a green light. The invasion that killed 200,000 people was enabled by superpower silence.
