A day for the rain people hope for, prepare for, complain about, celebrate, and remember.
Timor-Leste promotes its pristine reefs, mountain treks, and cultural heritage. Divers explore the waters of Atauro Island, which has more reef fish species per site than anywhere else on Earth. Atauro Island holds the world record for reef fish biodiversity : 336 species counted at a single site. That's more than the entire Caribbean. The reefs are pristine precisely because 24 years of occupation and isolation meant no commercial fishing, no tourism, no development. War preserved what peace might have destroyed.
