Dia da Luta

Commemorating the 1975 founding of Fretilin, the political party that led the independence movement. The day is observed with ceremonies and the singing of resistance songs. The name "Fretilin" stands for Frente Revolucionária de Timor-Leste Independente : Revolutionary Front for an Independent Timor-Leste. Founded in 1974, it became both a political party and a guerrilla army. In Timor, your political party was literally your army, your government-in-waiting, and your social network. Party membership was a life-or-death choice.
