Anniversary of the 1975 declaration of independence from Portugal : just nine days before Indonesia invaded. The day is both celebration and mourning. Timor-Leste declared independence on November 28, 1975. Indonesia invaded on December 7. Nine days of sovereignty. Nine days of freedom. Nine days of being a nation. The proclamation was never withdrawn : Timor considered itself independent for the entire 24-year occupation. November 28 is the day Timor said "we are free," and meant it for a quarter century.
