Not an official holiday, but try finding someone at work. Nochevieja

Another midnight celebration with the whole family. The leftover pan dulce from Christmas reappears, the sidra is still flowing, and someone counts down from ten. Paper fireworks in the street, hugs all around, and the unshakeable feeling that next year, surely, things will be better. "El ano que viene si," the eternal Argentine hope.

Véspera de Ano Novo

Fireworks over Dili harbor, family feasts, and the ritual cleaning of homes for the new year. In rural areas, families perform fukun : a ritual sweeping of the house to remove bad spirits. The midnight sweeping isn't just symbolic : it's directed. The bad spirits are swept toward the uma lulik (sacred house), where they're believed to be absorbed and neutralized by the ancestors. The sacred house is a spiritual filter for the entire village. Where others build museums; Timor builds living sanctuaries.
