Dia da Juventude

Anniversary of the 1991 Santa Cruz massacre, when Indonesian troops opened fire on a peaceful funeral procession marching to the Santa Cruz cemetery in Dili. Over 250 Timorese : most of them young people : were killed. The Santa Cruz massacre was captured on video by British journalist Max Stahl and broadcast worldwide. Until that footage aired, the world had no face for Timor's suffering. The image of young people with flowers and flags being mowed down by rifles changed international opinion overnight. November 12 isn't just Youth Day : it's the day Timor's youth forced the world to look.

Santa Cruz Massacre Commemoration

Each year, Timorese recreate the 1991 march from the Motael Church to the Santa Cruz cemetery, carrying flowers and photos of the dead. The march is silent : no speeches, no slogans. Just footsteps and flowers. The original 1991 march was also silent : it was a funeral procession for Sebastião Gomes, a young man killed by Indonesian forces. The marchers carried flowers and banners. They sang "E FDTL" and "Viva Timor-Leste." When the troops opened fire, the flowers fell alongside the people carrying them. To this day, flowers are the protest symbol of Timor.
