The anniversary of the 1954 founding of TANU, the party that led Tanzania to independence. "Saba Saba" means "seven seven" : the 7th of the 7th month. The Dar es Salaam International Trade Fair opens, and half the city visits. The AHA: Julius Nyerere founded TANU with almost no money, no army, and no international backing, and within seven years had negotiated independence from the British Empire. He did it with words, not weapons. The trade fair is the celebration; the history is the AHA.
The Dar es Salaam International Trade Fair opens every July 7th and runs for two weeks. Half of Dar visits. The AHA: the fair grounds become a temporary city : exhibition halls, food courts, live music stages, and a livestock section where you can buy a prize bull. Business deals are made next to cotton candy stands. Government ministers tour the same aisles as schoolchildren. It is the only place in Tanzania where you can see a Japanese tractor, a Maasai jewelry display, and a pyramid of mangoes in the same afternoon.
