The anniversary of the 1964 revolution when the Afro-Shirazi Party overthrew the Omani Sultan. Zanzibar shuts down entirely. The AHA: this revolution happened barely a month after independence from Britain, and it was led by a man named John Okello : a Ugandan-born bricklayer who had arrived in Zanzibar as a laborer. He seized the radio station, the armory, and the government in a single night. The revolution directly led to the union with Tanganyika, creating Tanzania. Every Zanzibari over seventy can tell you exactly where they were when Okello's voice came over the radio.
