The birthday of Julius Kambarage Nyerere, born July 29, 1922, in Butiama village near Lake Victoria. The AHA: Nyerere is the only African founding father who voluntarily stepped down from power, in 1985, and who lived on a teacher's pension in his home village. He translated Shakespeare into Swahili : Julius Caesar and The Merchant of Venice : because he believed Tanzanians should read great literature in their own language.
