Dia de la Mujer

National holiday since 2024. The marches through Santiago are among the largest in Latin America, filling the Alameda from La Moneda to Baquedano with green scarves and fierce conviction. Chilean feminism has its own voice and it does not ask permission.

Siku ya Wanawake

Marches through the streets of every major town. Women wear kangas printed with that year's theme : and here is the AHA: the kanga isn't just fabric, it's a wearable newspaper. Each kanga carries a Swahili proverb (jina) at the bottom, and Tanzanian women use these proverbs to say things they cannot say out loud. A woman wearing a kanga that reads "Mpeni wangu heshima" (Give me my respect) is making a statement everyone around her can read. The revolution is right there in the hem.
