Shuangshijie
The anniversary of the 1911 Wuchang Uprising that began the Xinhai Revolution and led to the founding of the Republic of China. The celebration includes a military parade, the president's address, and fireworks. The flag is blue, white, and red. The national anthem plays. In the years of authoritarian rule, National Day was compulsory and joyless. In democratic Taiwan, it is a day off work and an excuse for a barbecue. The question of what National Day means for Taiwan : an island that has never been governed by the People's Republic of China, that has its own democracy, its own military, its own passport, its own Olympic team, but is not recognized as a country by most of the world : is the question that defines Taiwanese politics. Double Ten Day does not answer it. It just puts flags on it.
