Regional/Cultural Day
Eid al-Milad al-Urthudhuks
The Orthodox Christmas is celebrated on January 7th by Syria's Greek Orthodox, Syriac Orthodox, and Armenian Christian communities : roughly 10% of the population but one of the oldest continuous Christian communities on Earth. The celebration centres on midnight mass in churches that have stood since the earliest centuries of Christianity: the Chapel of Saint Paul in Damascus, the Church of Saint Simeon near Aleppo, and the ancient monasteries of the Wadi al-Nasara (Valley of the Christians). The traditional Christmas meal includes kibbeh, fatteh, and ma'amoul (date-filled cookies). Syrian Christmas is not about presents; it is about presence : visiting every relative you have on Christmas Day, and the house must never be empty of guests.
