Noche Buena

The real Christmas. Families gather, the Viejito Pascuero (Santa Claus) leaves gifts under the tree, and the pan de Pascua and cola de mono flow. The meal is late, the conversation is long, and at midnight everyone hugs. Christmas in Chile is Noche Buena. December 25th is just the aftermath.

Nochebuena

The real celebration is the 24th, not the 25th. The whole family gathers at midnight for vitel tone, pan dulce, and sidra. The heat is brutal, the fan is on high, and someone always sets off fireworks in the street. At midnight, the toast happens and kids run around with globo lanterns.

Celebrate the holidays with red gifts and festive decorations.

Christmas Eve

In the ancient Christian quarters of Damascus, Aleppo, Homs, and the Wadi al-Nasara, Christmas Eve is celebrated with midnight mass, the lighting of candles, and the traditional meal of kibbeh, fatteh, and ma'amoul. In Maaloula, the mass includes prayers in Aramaic : the language of Christ. The streets are decorated with lights, and the bakeries sell ma'amoul, ghrybeh, and ka'ak (ring-shaped cookies) by the kilogram. The Syrian Christmas is not about presents; it is about presence : visiting every relative, every neighbour, every friend, and the house must never be empty of guests.
