The Syrian Christian community celebrates the Exaltation of the Cross with processions, liturgies, and the lighting of bonfires on the hilltops. In the Wadi al-Nasara (Valley of the Christians), the bonfires are visible for miles, and the villages celebrate with dancing (dabkeh), food, and the traditional cross-shaped bread (ka'ak al-salib). The festival is especially important in Saidnaya and Maaloula, where the Christian communities are among the oldest in the world.
