The real celebration is the 24th, not the 25th. The whole family gathers at midnight for vitel tone, pan dulce, and sidra. The heat is brutal, the fan is on high, and someone always sets off fireworks in the street. At midnight, the toast happens and kids run around with globo lanterns.
The main Christmas celebration in Sweden takes place on the afternoon of the 24th. After the Disney special, the family eats the julbord, a Christmas smorgasbord of ham, meatballs, herring, Jansson's temptation (a potato and anchovy casserole), and liver pate. At 3 PM, a relative or friend dresses as Tomte, the Swedish Santa, and distributes gifts. The entire evening is structured ritual, and deviation from the sequence is noted.
