Today every ethnic group in Suriname claims it as their own, which is exactly the point: in a country of 14 spoken languages, heri heri needs no translation. The Pagara Estafette lights thousands of firecrackers in a chain along the streets of Paramaribo at midnight : a tradition that originated from the Dutch/Chinese custom of driving away evil spirits with noise, but in Suriname it became something more: the sound of a nation that refused to be silent.
