The anniversary of the 1863 abolition of slavery in Suriname. Keti Koti means "broken chains" in Sranan Tongo, and it is the most important day in the Surinamese calendar. On July 1, 1863, approximately 35,000 people were "freed" : but the Dutch government compensated the slaveholders, not the enslaved. Each enslaved person was valued at 300 guilders and that money went to their former "owners." The enslaved received nothing but a proclamation. In 2022, the Dutch prime minister finally apologized. In 2023, Suriname demanded 5 billion euros in reparations. The chains are broken; the debt is not. The tradition is to eat heri heri, sing Keti Koti songs, and wear traditional clothing : including the kotomisi (the Creole traditional dress with its elaborate headdress). The kotomisi is not a costume. It is a uniform of survival.
The annual Keti Koti memorial in Amsterdam's Oosterpark is the largest Emancipation Day celebration outside Suriname. Over 40,000 people attend the Amsterdam Keti Koti festival : which is remarkable considering that the Netherlands only officially acknowledged its role in the slave trade in 2002. The Surinamese diaspora in the Netherlands is over 350,000 people : more than half the population of Suriname itself. Amsterdam has more Surinamese restaurants than Paramaribo. The diaspora has preserved Surinamese culture with a fierce intensity that only comes from displacement. When you've been uprooted, the food, the music, the language : they're not just culture. They're proof that you exist.
