Ramadan

In Indonesia, the world's largest Muslim-majority nation, Ramadan transforms the country. The pre-dawn meal (sahur) is eaten at 3 AM, the fast lasts until sunset, and the breaking of the fast (buka puasa) is a communal event. In Jakarta, the Ramadan markets (Pasar Ramadhan) sell kolak (banana and coconut compote), es buah (fruit ice), and dates by the kilogram. Mosques fill with worshippers praying through the night, and the women's sections are so full that latecomers pray on the steps outside. During Ramadan, the suhur meal is eaten before the first light. The call is made by the musaharati, a man who walks the streets beating a drum and calling people to wake.
