Dia de Sant Jordi

In Catalonia, this is the day of the rose and the book. Men give women roses, women give men books, and the streets of Barcelona fill with flower stalls and bookstands. The tradition commemorates the legend of Saint George slaying the dragon, whose blood became a rose. In 1995, UNESCO adopted this date as World Book Day, but in Catalonia, it has been a book-giving day since the 1920s.
