In San Sebastian, the tamborrada brings 20,000 drummers to the streets over 24 hours, wearing 19th-century cook and soldier costumes. The tradition commemorates the 1813 burning of the city by British and Portuguese troops, and the drumming begins at midnight and does not stop until the following midnight. The entire city smells of food, drink, and drums.
