Independence Day (British Somaliland)
The anniversary of the 1960 independence of British Somaliland. Five days later, on July 1st, British Somaliland united with Italian Somaliland to form the Republic of Somalia. The AHA! moment: British Somaliland was independent for exactly five days. Those five days are the only time that the territory of Somaliland existed as a sovereign nation. It joined Somalia voluntarily. It has been trying to leave ever since.
