The real Christmas. Families gather, the Viejito Pascuero (Santa Claus) leaves gifts under the tree, and the pan de Pascua and cola de mono flow. The meal is late, the conversation is long, and at midnight everyone hugs. Christmas in Chile is Noche Buena. December 25th is just the aftermath.
The real celebration is the 24th, not the 25th. The whole family gathers at midnight for vitel tone, pan dulce, and sidra. The heat is brutal, the fan is on high, and someone always sets off fireworks in the street. At midnight, the toast happens and kids run around with globo lanterns.
The preparation of the Christmas Eve table is a ritual in itself. The tablecloth must be white, symbolizing purity, and a bundle of straw is placed under it to recall the manger. An extra plate is set for an unexpected guest or a departed family member, reflecting the Slovak belief that no one should be turned away on Christmas Eve. Garlic is placed at each corner of the table for health, and an iron object under each plate gives strength. The table is not cleared until morning, because it is believed that the spirits of the dead visit during the night to share the feast.
The most important day of the Slovak Christmas. The dinner table is set with an extra place for an unexpected guest or a departed family member. The meal begins with oplatky, thin wafers pressed with religious designs, dipped in honey and garlic. Twelve dishes are served, representing the twelve apostles, and carp is the traditional main course. After dinner, the Christmas tree is lit and gifts are opened. In villages, the eldest family member throws a walnut into the corner of each room to ward off evil spirits. Under the tablecloth, a bundle of straw recalls the manger in Bethlehem, and an iron object is placed under each plate for strength in the coming year.
The traditions of Christmas Eve are among the most cherished in Slovak culture. Before dinner, the father of the family breaks the oplatky wafer and shares it with each member, a gesture of unity and forgiveness. Honey is spread on the oplatky for sweetness, and garlic for health. After the meal, an apple is cut in half: if the seeds form a star, the family will have good luck; if a cross appears, someone may die. walnuts are cracked, and if the nut is whole, the year will be good. These traditions are observed even in families that are not religious, because they are Slovak before they are Christian.
