Regional/Cultural Day
Den svateho Josefa
The feast of St. Joseph is observed particularly in the villages of western Slovakia, where Joseph is a common name and name-day celebrations are as important as birthdays. Families named Josef host open houses, and visitors bring gifts of wine, pastries, and flowers. The tradition of celebrating name days (meniny) is one of the most enduring Slovak customs, and the calendar of name days is printed in every Slovak diary and newspaper.
