Den boja za slobodu a demokraciu

Marks the beginning of the Velvet Revolution in 1989, when student demonstrations in Prague triggered the fall of communism. In Slovakia, the day also commemorates the 1939 student demonstration against the Nazi puppet state. It is a public holiday and a reminder of the price of freedom. In Bratislava, the commemoration includes a march from the university to the square where the Velvet Revolution rallies took place, and veterans of the revolution lay flowers at the memorial to the students who were beaten by police on November 17, 1989.
