The feast of St. Martin, the patron saint of horses and soldiers, is celebrated with the traditional roast goose dinner and the first tasting of the new wine. In Bratislava, St. Martin is also the patron of the cathedral where the Hungarian kings were crowned, and the day is observed with a procession through the Old Town and a blessing of the horses. The roast goose, served with lokse (potato pancakes) and red cabbage, is the centerpiece of the meal, and the new wine, called svatomartinske, is released at exactly 11:11 AM on November 11, a tradition that dates back to the Austro-Hungarian Empire.
