The feast of St. Lucy is one of the most magical nights in Slovak tradition. In the past, it was believed that witches roamed freely on this night, and families protected their homes by burning incense and drawing crosses on the doors. In some regions, young women write the names of twelve potential husbands on slips of paper and throw one into the fire each day until Christmas; the last remaining name reveals their future spouse. The traditions of St. Lucy's Day are among the oldest in Slovakia, predating Christianity and rooted in the winter solstice.
