The patroness of Slovakia is honored at the Basilica of Sastin, where a national pilgrimage draws tens of thousands. The statue of the Seven Sorrows Virgin at Sastin has been a focal point of Slovak Catholic identity since the 18th century, and the pilgrimage is one of the largest religious gatherings in the country. The faithful walk for days to reach Sastin, sleeping in fields and churches along the way, and the basilica is filled with the sound of hymns and prayers.
